Make sure you do not fall for an online fraud by taking some simple actions to help protect your personal data and assets
Always be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls, emails and attachments. Never open attachments from unexpected sources. Never give anyone access to your devices without verifying them first.
Be aware that phishing texts and emails can be received from unfamiliar sources, but fraudulent messages may also appear to have been sent from your friends and family, without their knowledge. Care should be taken regarding any email that you are not expecting to receive. Always take independent steps to authenticate the message before you are tempted to click on links you have not specifically sought yourself.
Always be suspicious of unsolicited emails or offers that look too good to be true – they invariably are.
Regularly check the transactions on all your bank accounts, either on printed statements or, better still, more frequently online.
If you are contacted by anyone identifying themselves as a Nedbank Private Wealth representative, always call your usual Nedbank Private Wealth contact to confirm their authenticity before responding.
If you receive a call from the bank that you think may be suspicious, always ring off and telephone us back for verification. In these cases, always ensure you can hear the dial tone and only ever call us on a number you regularly use.
Remember that email is not a secure communication channel, so please do not use it for sending any personal or confidential information.
To ensure the security of any personal data stored on your devices, always be wary of using public wireless networks or accessing the internet in public places.
Cash machines (ATMs) can also be used to access your secure data. Criminals can set up hidden cameras to record your PIN or tamper with the machine to retain your card. The cash machines often appear perfectly normal, so always shield the keypad with your free hand while entering your PIN. If your Platinum Visa card is retained by the machine, please call us immediately.
Be wary of point of sale (POS) scams which can occur if retail or hospitality staff take your card out of your sight. Fraudsters can copy a card in minutes using card readers. If you think your Platinum Visa card may have been copied, please call us immediately.
When entering your login details on websites, look for the padlock symbol shown alongside the web address. This should mean that your connection is encrypted and therefore your login information cannot be intercepted.
Even website or email addresses that exactly mirror the legitimate ones can be manipulated to take you to a malicious website. Whenever you connect to our online banking website, always verify that you are indeed on our secure website by checking for the padlock symbol.
Your online login details are specific to you so never share your passwords with anybody else.
Please note, you will never be asked to provide your online banking security details for any reason other than when you are prompted for them by our online login system. If our online banking system appears unusual in any way, please do not proceed but call your regular contact at the bank.
Always use passwords or PINs to secure your devices and change them regularly. Try to use a different password for each different login you have.
Use strong passwords that include letters, numbers, capitals and special characters, if possible. The longer you can make your password, the more resistant it is to guessing.
Never store passwords as plain text. If you must store them, always encrypt them using an appropriate and reputable password manager tool.
Install reputable security software and keep it up-to-date. Criminals are constantly developing new ways to attack your systems so out-of-date anti-virus and anti-malware software is effectively useless.
If your computer or mobile device prompts you to download a new update, it is important to do so as soon as possible to keep your system protected. Most computers can be set to update automatically, which removes any delay.
Running a regular anti-virus scan can highlight if your system has been exposed to any viruses or malware.
